LOWESTOFT AIR SHOW 2002

Today's weather: A hot and sunny day.

Visitors to the 6th annual Lowestoft Air Show got more than they bargained for this year when a RAF Harrier jump jet got into trouble at the end of it's display and crashed into the sea. Although very close to the water the pilot managed to safely eject form his plane and was picked up by lifeboat. The RAF is hoping to recover the aircraft over the course of the weekend.

In this manoeuvre the higher of the two planes is inverted as you can see by the wing-walker hanging underneath.

Crowed beach

Hardly a space to be had on the beach...

Crowded promenade

And it's no better on the promenade.

Hanging toys

Bob the Builder and friends wait hoping to find a new home.

On it's way home

At least this old dog's on his way home.

Helicopter rescue

This RAF Sea King search and rescue helicopter is no longer part of the display, it hovers over the harbour about to winch the downed pilot off the lifeboat before taking him to hospital for a check up.

Crash site

The red buoy marks the spot where earlier a RAF Harrier jump jet was just finishing it's final "bow" to the crowd when disaster struck and the plane with what looked like engine failure crashed into the sea. Thankfully the pilot ejected safely and was picked up by the local lifeboat.

Red Arrows Simulator

After watching the Red Arrows display earlier in the afternoon, visitors can now try the Red Arrows simulator to see how it feels to be a Red Arrows pilot.

Fun Fair

After all the flying is over there's still the fun of the fair to enjoy.
