BECCLES
Today's weather: Sunshine and showers.

The town of Beccles stands about 9 miles inland from Lowestoft and is the largest market town in the Waveney district. A large bell tower that can be seen on all approaches to the town dominates it. The name Beccles derives from the Anglo Saxon 'Beck' meaning Stream and 'Leas' meaning Meadow. |

A view looking up "Sheepgate" towards the new market place. Many of the street names in Beccles end in "gate" being derived from the Saxon word for "Street". |

The Bell Tower of St Michael's church dominates the centre of Beccles and the surrounding countryside, traditionally bell towers were built on the east side of churches but due to cliffs and the enormous weight of the tower this one had to be built on the west side. Built in the 16 century it stands 97 feet high and has over 100 steps leading to the top. |

The octagonal town hall was built in 1756 on the site of the medieval Market Cross. |

Beccles Common is also the home of Beccles golf club a 9-hole course that was established in 1899. |

The golf club's clubhouse looks as old as the course itself. |

Owners of grazing cattle and members of the public also have access to the Common so it can be quite a dangerous place for golfers and public alike. |
