The building of the bell tower at St Mary's commenced in 1525 with promised assistance from Cardinal Wolsey but due to his demise that assistance never materialised and work on the tower ceased in 1530... |

So this unique Bell Cage was built in 1531 as a temporary measure but the bells have been rung from here ever since. The five bells were removed in 1972 to enable restoration work to be carried out on the cage and the bells. |
