LOWESTOFT HARBOUR

Today's weather: A mainly overcast and very windy day with a few sunny spells.

Oil rigs under construction

Oil or gas rigs under construction on the north extension, once completed they will be lifted onto the barge in the foreground and be towed out for installation.

Small fishing boats

Very few fishing boats still fish out of Lowestoft nowadays. Only last week two more of the larger Beam Trawlers left harbour for the last time, sailing off to Denmark to be broken up under the Governments decommissioning scheme.

Oil rig standby ship

There's usually more rig standby ships in harbour than fishing boats nowadays.

Lifeboat leaving harbour

Lowestoft's Lifeboat The Spirit of Lowestoft leaving harbour on her weekly exercise.

Lifeboat engulfed in spray

The sea was quite rough today and in this shot the lifeboat is almost totally engulfed in sea spray.

Survey ship entering harbour

Once the lifeboat had left harbour this small survey ship started entering harbour, with rough seas the ship has to precisely line itself up the enter through the quite narrow pier heads.

Survey in harbour mouth

She finally makes it through the pier heads.

Survey ship safely in harbour

And into the safety of the harbour.

Lowestoft seafront from pier

With today's rough conditions there's no one about on the seafront or even any dog walkers on the beach.

Lifeboatman statue

Statue of a lifeboat man standing near the towns bridge.
The inscription reads
IN DEDICATION
TO ALL LOWESTOFT LIFEBOATMEN
PAST PRESENT & FUTURE
FOR THEIR STERLING DUTY
TO SEAFARER'S OF THE WORLD

Lydia Eva

Lydia Eva, the worlds last steam powered herring drifter at her mooring, she is usually shared between the towns of Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth and put on display for visitors to look around but due to her poor condition is no longer safe to display. The charitable trust to which she belongs has started an appeal to save her, anyone who might like to help can find more information at there website at www.lydiaeva.org.uk

Spy Ship

Probably the most unusual ship ever to enter Lowestoft harbour is this ex East German spy ship, with the collapse of East Germany the ship was taken over by the Soviet Union but was eventually sold and arrived in Lowestoft last year to undergo a feasibility study to decide what is to become of it, some of the suggestions have included a floating casino or a restaurant.

Spy ship from the stern

Another view of this very odd looking ship this time from the rear.
