OLD FELIXSTOWE
Today's weather: A beautiful sunny and warm day.
Old Felixstowe stands at the mouth of the River Deben, much of the town of Felixstowe is only about 100 years old but Old Felixstowe has been in existence since Roman times. Records of a ferry operating between Felixstowe and Bawdsey date from about 1200 AD, a passenger ferry still operates to this day but only during the summer months. |

The walk to Old Felixstowe starts at a cliff top car park and follows the seawall past the golf course. If you enjoy golf this seat is a great place to sit and watch from. |

This is one of two Martello Tower that I passed on the walk to Old Felixstowe. |

Martello Towers were built during the 19th century to safeguard the coast against invasion by Napoleon. These towers are 2 of 18 that were built along the Suffolk coast mainly concentrated around the estuaries of the rivers Deben and Orwell. |

The mouth of the river Deben, because of the strong tide these small yachts were finding it hard to get out to sea, on the far bank stands Bawdsey Manor. |

Bawdsey Manor was built during the 1800s by Sir Cuthbert Quilter and remained the family home until bought by the Air Minister in 1936 and renamed RAF Bawdsey. It was here that Robert Watson-Watt and his team invented Radar, which was to play such a vital role during World War II. |

Bawdsey. |

The Ferryboat Inn now stands where once the ferryman's house stood. |

Lobster pots. |

Plenty of people buying fresh fish from this stall today. |

The only road to Old Felixstowe passes right through the middle of the golf course so you have to keep an eye open for any stray golf balls; at one hole they actually play over the road. |
