The village of Polstead lies in rolling countryside in the south of the county between Ipswich and Sudbury. It was in Polstead that the famous Red Barn murder of Maria Marten occurred; it was to become one of the most famous murders of the 19th century. In May 1827 Maria, the 26 year old daughter of a mole catcher was to meet her lover William Corder in the Red Barn from where they would travel to Ipswich but Maria was never seen again. In April 1828 the floor of the Red Barn was dug up after Maria's mother dreamt that her daughter was in the barn and her remains were found. William was arrested, tried and convicted at Bury St Edmunds assizes and publicly executed in front of 10,000 people in August 1828. |
