SAXMUNDHAM

Today's weather: A bright and sunny day and quite warm.

Saxmundham is a small market town standing on the old A12 coaching road from London to Great Yarmouth.

 

River Fromus

The River Fromus, which runs through the town, is tributary of the River Alde.

Monk cottage

Monks cottages are some of the oldest dwellings in the town.

St John's church

The flint faced parish church of St John the Baptist, situated on high ground overlooking the town, it is thought to have been built on the site of a Saxon church.

A beautiful stained glass window in the church.

Saxmundham High Street

Saxmundham high street now a much quieter place since a by-pass was built some years ago.

Market Hall

The Market Hall was built as a Corn Exchange in 1846 and given to the town by the Long family in 1864.

Angel cottages

Angel cottages have been converted from the old 16th Angel Inn that once served travellers on route to and from London.

Water pump

The town water pump now standing in the market place opposite Angel cottages, it originally stood in Mill Road. The Long Family presented it to the town in 1838.

Railway cottages

Railway cottages, built to serve the needs of the railway workers.
