SIZEWELL

Today's weather: Mainly overcast with a few sunny spells but still quite warm.

Sizewell is a small idyllic village on the Suffolk coast with only a few houses and a public house. The only blot on the landscape and the village is not one but two nuclear power stations.

Leiston Abbey ruins

On the way to Sizewell I passed the extensive ruins of Leiston Abbey

Bracken

At this time of year the Bracken has turned a beautiful golden brown, in the background you can just see part of Sizewell A Nuclear power station.

Seat on cliff top

This seat on the cliff top is a wonderful place to sit in the summer or even on an autumn day like this.

Old wall

Whilst walking on the cliff top I came across this old flint faced wall, now in a sorry state but once the boundary wall of Sizewell Hall.

Folly

Further along the path I came across this wonderful folly that was probably used as a sun deck or viewing platform whilst the gate leads to steps down onto the beach.

Fishing boats on the beach

Fishing boats still fish from beach in the shadow of Sizewell's two Nuclear power stations.

Power Stations

Sizewell's two Nuclear power stations dominate the landscape; the first building is Sizewell A a Magnox gas cooled reactor whilst the second building with the white dome is Sizewell B, Britain's only Pressurised Water Reactor.

Sizewell beach

Suffolk has nearly a quarter of all the vegetated Shingle in the country. The ever-present winds and sea spray combined with the lack of water and nutrients makes life difficult for plants that have had to specially adapt to survive in these harsh conditions.
