WALSHAM LE WILLOWS

Today's weather: A lovely hot and sunny day.

Walsham le willows is a sprawling village situated a dozen or so miles from Bury St Edmunds. The village surrounds an estate that was bought by Richard Martineau a partner in the Whitbread brewery in 1853. The family did much to improve the lot of the people and workers of Walsham with many new buildings and modern housing for the estate workers.

The Six Bells pub

The Six Bells Inn, the building was built in 1523 on the site of a former house called Fullers and has been used as various shops including a grocers and candle makers until becoming a pub around 1844.

St Mary's church

St Mary’s church, built in the 15th century replacing a Norman church and probably a Saxon one that stood on the site.

Old Rolls Royce

A lovely day to be out in a convertible car, especially when it’s a classic Rolls Royce.

Estate houses

Built by John Martineau these mock Jacobean cottages were built for the benefit of estate workers, each dwelling came with ½ an acre of land a pigsty an apple and walnut tree and a well with pump and a shared bake house. It must have been pure luxury compared to the way most people would have lived in the 1800s.

The village pound

The old animal pound, before the land was enclosed and animals were allowed to graze on common land and any strays would be placed into the pound awaiting collection by there owners.

Old infants school

The Old Infants school another of the gifts from the Martineau’s, it provided schooling for children as young as 3 years old at the cost of 1 penny per week per child.

The White house

The White House, a lovely thatched house and one of the earliest houses in Walsham.

Old shop

The Old Village Stores, I’m not sure if this is the original front or weather the brick peers seen inside the windows are to hold the building up.

Priory Room

The Priory Room, yet another of the gifts from the Martineau family, opened in 1902 as a Sunday school and meeting place.
